Property taxes are going up 36 percent in Allegheny County next year.
That's one result of Tuesday night's County Council meeting.
The vote to approve next year's budget was 10-5, just enough to pass the spending plan.
County Executive Sara Innamorato told KDKA-TV she reached a compromise with council for a 1.7 millage increase, instead of the 2.2 she wanted, without any layoffs.
Council President Pat Catena, David Bonaroti, Sam DeMarco, Suzanne Filiaggi and Bob Macey all voted against the property tax increase. Innamorato claims it will balance the budget.
Rich Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission and former County Executive, said there was some contention, but.
“County Executive Innamorato and her team worked hard, they got together with council members,” said Fitzgerald. “Council wanted it at 1.3 or something like that, the administration wanted 2.2. They kind of met in the middle at 1.7.”
Fitzgerald says even though the property tax is being adjusted to inflation, the county's financial position is, in his view, solid.
