A highly-rated restaurant in Downtown Pittsburgh has been ordered to close after over 20 violations.

Caravan on Smithfield Street is a Halal restaurant that features kebabs, gyros, chicken, breads and many more dishes.

What closed the restaurant was the basement of the restaurant was flooded with an active sewage backup and a complete sewer line failure.

Some of the other high-risk violations reported by the Allegheny County Health Department include a 50-pound bag of carrots “adulterated” with non-potable water in a flooded basement, on the ground.

A manager said the carrots for were personal use.

Sliced tomatoes were temped at 55 degrees along with “flats of eggs” stored on a prep table with no temperature control.

A worker was seen coughing directly over food in the kitchen. Another was seen dropping equipment on the flood, rinsing them in the handwashing sink and then returning them for use. Items must be properly washed.

The closure was posted on April 12 and as of Friday at 4 p.m., remains active on the Health Department’s website.
