There's an SUV in the North Park Lake. At least for now.

Allegheny County police say a 23-year-old Franklin Park man apparently tried to drive the vehicle across the frozen lake around 10:30pm Wednesday night.

Lieutenant Scott Scherer, the District 3 Commander, told KDKA Radio how it all happened. "Apparently he drove down the boat launch, right on the other side there, and decided to drive on the lake," he explained. "He did not make it all the way across."

Police say the man told them that he mistook the frozen lake for a parking lot.

The 2010 Subaru SUV ended up partially submerged in the water after the ice gave way.

Allegheny County Police say the driver wasn't hurt and remained at the scene until officers arrived.

Attempts Wednesday night to remove the vehicle were unsuccessful. Crews will try to remove it from the lake Thursday during the day.

No charges have been filed against the driver at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

"We are conferring with the Fish and Game Commission because there are vehicle code violations as well as Fish and Game Commission violations, so we're not exactly sure of all the charges that he will receive. We're gonna work on that together this week," said Scherer.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call their tip line at 1-833-255-8477.
