KDKA Radio Editorial: Embrace The U.S. Open Golf Championship

The eyes of the golf world will be on Pittsburgh starting in a few days, specifically Oakmont Country Club, for the 125th playing of the United States Open.

Festivities begin Monday with around 200,000 people expected to attend the event from all over the world.

The U.S. Open presents another opportunity for our area to show its beauty, opportunities and people in person and around the world, with nearly 6 million people watching the final round last year.

It is also a major revenue generator, with the US Golf Association saying $200 million was generated the last time the U.S. Open was played at Oakmont in 2016.

While businesses in Oakmont have been overlooked in the past, the USGA is working closer with the community this year to get more money directly pumped into the local economy.

Our great partners at Oakmont Bakery tell KDKA they've never been more involved with the U.S. Open than they are this year with the organization ordering up to 18,000 products a day.

So, if you get stuck in some golf-related traffic next week on Route 28, just remember "short term pain for a long-term gain."
