A family in Kennedy Township is looking for donations after one of their three rescue dogs was hit by a vehicle and severely injured.

Cash got away from his family’s yard on Tuesday and was hit by a vehicle on McCoy Road.

Celeste Kamenar tells KDKA Radio, “It was the most traumatic sight I've ever witnessed. Something I'll never forget.”

Cash was rushed to a local animal hospital and admitted into the ICU. Unfortunately, the veterinarian had to remove Cash’s entire leg, after he suffered a shattered scapula.

The whole shoulder and shoulder blade were removed as well.

On Wednesday, Cash’s surgery was a success and is recovering in the ICU before returning home in a day or two.

A long road of recovery is ahead for cash that includes medication, therapy, vet visits, medical devices and more.

“Although his recovery will be tough, he is tougher!” said Kamenar. “We're very optimistic that with the help of his care team and the outpouring support that we are receiving from the community, Cash will come out of this on top and will be back his loving, affectionate, silly self in the near future.”

To help, a friend of the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Cash’s medical expenses.

Cash’s background wasn’t a happy one until he was rescued by a woman who took him out of a "horrible situation."

He was found left abandoned in a home by himself and was in a crate 24 hours away.

The Kamenar family took Cash in after he recovered and planned to foster him but couldn’t.

“We all fell so deeply in love with him that we couldn't imagine ever giving him up. He instantly became a part of our family, and Chase & Violet (the other dogs) quickly accepted him as their sibling.

Over these past two years Cash has flourished. He was spunky, loving, goofy and healthy as a horse!”
