A family-owned grocery store in the Pittsburgh area is closing its doors for good after 70 years in business.
Ferri’s IGA Supermarket, on the 3900 block of Old William Penn Highway, in Murrysville said in a post on Facebook Monday afternoon, they will close at the end of May.
In the post, the Ferri family, which has been in the grocery business since 1916, said pressure from big box stores has become too much.
“The economic landscape has shifted in ways that have made it difficult for small, independent supermarkets like ours to thrive.”
That was also compounded by a pharmacy breaking its lease two years, before it was up, late last year.
The Ferri family thanked its staff, past and present, along with their customers.
“We extend our sincerest appreciate for your support and patronage over the years. Your trust and loyalty have meant the world to us, and we will cherish the memories of serving you each week at Ferri’s Supermarket.”
The Ferri family says they will continue to “contribute to the vibrancy of our community through other endeavors.”
Many customers and former workers expressed sadness, reacting to the closure on Facebook.
