The Farmers’ Almanac admits it was wrong (along with most other outlets) when it came to predicted the 2023-24 winter forecast.

What was supposed to be a cold and snowy winter ended up being another relatively mild winter, thanks to El Nino.

So, what is in store for this winter in Pittsburgh?

Sandi Duncan, editor of the Farmers’ Almanac says the 2024-25 winter forecast calls for more rain and less snow.

“Overall we’re seeing in your area, kind of moderate to mild temperatures,” said Duncan.

Officially the Farmers’ Almanac is calling it a “wet, winter whirlwind.”

That means we’ll see some back-to-back storms, especially in January and the end of January.

And, good news for skiers. Higher snow amounts are expected in the Laurel Highlands compared to last year.

El Nino ended before this summer, but experts expect La Nina to form and that means more storms in the winter.

El Nino is a mass of warm water in the pacific. La Nina is colder water and that affects the weather in our area and across the country.

If the over 200-year-old publication is correct, we’ll see our third mild winter in a row.

And what about next spring/summer? Scorching temperatures are expected to continue, just like this summer.
