All Allegheny County employees who are not vaccinated must now wear a mask and undergo weekly testing for COVID-19.
Masks are also now required for unvaccinated visitors at county buildings.
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald says the mandate is being conducted using the honor system. County health officials are reporting an increase in hospitalization, with most new patients being unvaccinated.
With those increase in numbers, Fitzgerald is urging all county employees to get vaccinated.
While Allegheny County is doing well on the vaccine front compared to other areas in the country, but he and other leaders want to make sure that no stone is left unturned.
We want to make sure number one that the people that we come in contact with, we in county government, and we serve people whether your filing your papers for court, whether you're dealing with human services, whether you're working with our parks. . . we want the people that we come in contact with to feel safe," said Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald adds that nearly two-thirds of county employees have been vaccinated.
