Five people were killed and several others were injured after a home exploded in Plum Saturday.

Allegheny County officials say the initial call came in around 10:30 a.m. for reports of an explosion with several homes either on fire or damaged along Rustic Ridge Dr. and Brookside Dr.

When first responders arrived, they found one home completely destroyed and two others on fire. They believed multiple people were trapped under debris.

Three people were taken to the hospital. Officials say two have since been released, while the other remains in critical condition.

First responders determined five people were unaccounted for and began rescue efforts once it was safe to do so. The bodies of four adults and one child were eventually recovered.

The victims have not been identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner, but multiple reports identify two of the victims as 38-year-old Casey Clontz and his 12-year-old son Keegan.

The explosion occurred at 141 Rustic Ridge Dr. Two other homes were destroyed by fire, while about a dozen homes were damaged.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Officials say determining the cause could take months or even years.

Allegheny County officials say the utilities in Rustic Ridge were shut off. Electricity has since been restored to most of the neighborhood. The public is asked to stay away from the scene.

Those impacted by the explosion are being directed to the Renton VFD.

Emotional support services are being offered at the Plum Borough High School library Monday and Tuesday.
