James was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

He began his radio broadcasting career in 1956 at WNEX in Macon, Georgia.

In later years, he worked as a news anchor and staff announcer at channel 11 in Pittsburgh, then as a news anchor and reporter at KQV Radio until joining KDKA Radio in 1971.

Dave remained with KDKA Radio and TV as a News Anchor/Reporter for nearly 35 years.

He went on to hold roles at Pittsburgh Business Radio and Renda Broadcasting stations including WHJB, WSHH, and WJAS.

KDKA Radio’s Rob Pratte remembered his former radio colleague.

“One thing about Dave James, he lived life to the fullest,” said Pratte. “He loved tennis. He loved to laugh, but he loved getting the story.”

Retired KDKA Radio reporter Barbara Boylan said James was “wickedly funny.”

But, when it came to the news, “he could sit down at a typewriter and then at a computer and just crank out a story, like blinking, it was perfect and it was just amazing to watch.”

According to his obituary, no service or memorial is planned, per his request

It asks friends to raise a glass of beer in Dave's honor saying he would have loved to share many more.

James was 85.
