Unleaded 88 gas still $1.99 at Sheetz, but is it safe for your car?

It depends

All Sheetz convenience stores are offering gasoline for only $1.99 a gallon, but there is a catch.

The blend of gas on sale is unleaded 88. Triple-A spokesperson Jim Garrity says not every car takes it.

“That’s the kind of thing where if you use it for a sustained period of time, the damage would add up inside the engine, but you could see some damage from using it even one time, so you don’t want to mess with it just because you’re looking at the pump the dollar signs are flashing before your eyes,” said Garrity.

Unleaded 88 has a higher amount of ethanol in it.

It is not approved to be used in cars produced before 2001, Heavy-duty trucks and motorcycles should also not use the blend.

The best way to check if your car can take unleaded 88 is to check your vehicle’s owner manual.

“Sheetz is a family owned and operated company and we are always looking for ways to help the communities we serve,” said Travis Sheetz, President and CEO of Sheetz in a statement. “We are excited to extend this offer to our customers as many of them start hitting the road for the Thanksgiving holiday.”

The current average of a gallon of gas in the Pittsburgh area is $3.93, so if your car does allow unleaded 88, you could save well over $20 at fill-up.

The promotion at Sheetz lasts through November 28.
