March 21st through 25th is the 60th anniversary of the historic Selma to Montgomery civil rights march in Alabama. Almost 900 miles to the north, Pittsburghers can be proud to say the city sent one of its best to cover the story.
His name is George Barbour, KDKA’s first Black reporter.
He interviewed civil rights leader John Lewis and recorded the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and did it under threats of violence. At one point, George had to run for his life.
Raised in Oakdale, Barbour overcame poverty and racism to become an award-winning reporter for the “Pittsburgh Courier” before joining KDKA.
He covered one of the most significant events of the civil rights movement, an event leading to passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
In fact, Barbour was the only Black radio reporter to march the entire route.
Thankfully, George Barbour’s coverage has been preserved and it will help us to never forget what was won during five crucial days six decades ago.
