After a search that lasted over eight hours, a Shaler student who ran off after his mother found a gun on his bed has been located.
The Allegheny County Sheriff's office says the 16-year-old showed up around 4 p.m. at a home he is known to visit along Soose Road in Shaler.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus says deputies joined in the search early on.
“We heard the call come over the police radio and we immediately sent multiple units over to assist,” said Kraus. “That’s a priority of our office, to assist in these types of matters with all the communities throughout Allegheny County.”
Because the teenager's home is so close to Shaler Area High school, police secured a perimeter around the building, though there was never a threat to the public.
The Sheriff’s Office used a drone and three K9 officers in an effort to located the 16-year-old.
Due to the student being a minor, no further information on his identity will be released.
