Literal thunder and lightning wiped out the Thursday night slate of high school football games in Western Pennsylvania this past week. But, on Friday, there was plenty of metaphorical thunder and lightning to be seen across the region.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 2:
Brady Wagner, Bishop Canevin
Wagner is at the helm of what looks to be a true contender for a WPIAL and PIAA title in Class AA this year. He showed why Friday.
The senior completed 20 of 27 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-7 blowout of a strong Neshannock team. Wagner added a rushing touchdown in the lopsided win, as well.
Wagner is a three-sport athlete who also plays baseball and basketball.
Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg, Highlands
No player in the WPIAL has been as impressive on the ground as Owen-Cratsenberg over the first two weeks.
On Friday, the junior ran for 285 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-22 win over Kiski Area.
That came after posting 240 yards and two scores against Greensburg Salem in the Golden Rams’ opener.
Owen-Cratsenberg, who now has 524 yards and seven touchdowns this season, has picked up an offer from Kent State.
Charles Spells, Indiana
Spells posted a record-breaking night Friday as Indiana ran away with a big win.
The sophomore rushed for a school record 320 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-27 win over Greensburg Salem.
The performance broke a 23-year school record by nearly 40 yards. Also a strong wrestler, Spells tied the Indiana record with five scores, as well.
Gabe Jenkins, Propel Braddock Hills
Propel Braddock Hills made a statement Friday with a lopsided win over New Castle. And Jenkins was the spark that got it done.
There senior ran 29 times for 246 yards and scored four touchdowns in the 48-28 victory.
Jenkins, a 4-star safety recruit, is committed to Colorado.
