Governor Tom Wolf attributes the uptick in violence in Pittsburgh and in other major cities to too many kids carrying guns.
Over the weekend three people were killed and a fourth shot on the North Side and on the South Side another person was shot in the chest in critical condition
On Tuesday morning, a man was shot in Homewood, just before 10:30 in the 7200 block of Kelly Street near North Homewood Avenue.
Police responding to multiple ShotSpotter alerts say the man had a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Nothing yet on his condition.
A manhunt is underway after a vehicle was shot up in Arnold on Monday. Surveillance video captured the shooting along Kenneth Avenue around 11:30 a.m.
An officer on patrol in the area heard the shots. Police say four people fled the scene, leading to a chase. Two are now in custody and at least one gun has been recovered
“I’m as outraged as anybody,” Wolf said on “The Big K Morning Show” Tuesday. “At the heart of this, are the guns in the hands of the people who shouldn’t have them, I mean it’s outrageous and it’s kids with guns. This is the kind of thing that’s got to stop.”
The governor called for what he calls common-sense gun laws such as the red flag laws, closing the gun show loopholes and home safety rules for keeping guns out of the hands of kids.
Locally, Pittsburgh Police and city leaders continue to sound the alarm on an increase in violence in the area.
Authorities are asking for help. Commander Richard Ford says everyone, including parents can step up.
“What are you doing?” sand Ford. “What are you doing as a parent? What’s your kid doing” Why’s your kid out there with a firearm? What are you doing about it?”
Mayor Ed Gainey says they continue grappling with the number of guns making it into the wrong hands.
“I’ve never seen so many young kids, and older adults with so many guns in their possession and at the end of the day, that’s the age-old question right now of where these guns are coming from,” said Gainey.
Both were visibly frustrated at a Monday news conference - calling the violence senseless and asking for anyone with information to come forward.
