Another downtown Pittsburgh business has decided to close after a nearly 125-year run.

Carl Herrmann Furs and Fine Outerwear, on Smithfield Street, will close early next year.

After getting its start on the North Side in the 1900's, the fur shop has been passed down from one generation to the next.

Carl “Guy” Herrmann worked full time for over 40 years.

Herrmann says the closure is due to multiple factors including “health concerns”.

The pandemic, which drove Downtown workers from their offices and into their homes, also factored into the decision.

Mr. Herrmann announced to customers in a letter:

“Working alongside my father for 40 years and continuing our family legacy has been one of the greatest honors of my life. We built something we are deeply proud of, and it has been a privilege to serve this community,” said Herrmann.

As a result of the closure, Carl Herrmann Furs will be liquidating all of its inventory, with some items up to 60 percent off.

That includes a multi-million-dollar inventor of “furs, shearlings, leather, cashmere” and more.

“We are incredibly grateful for the loyalty and support of our customers. Your patronage has been the cornerstone of our success, and we look forward to connecting with you one final time during our liquidation sale,” Herrmann added.

Herrmann plans to concentrate on hobbies and volunteering, including coaching soccer.
The store is scheduled to close on January 18.
