A man died and an officer was injured in New Castle early Sunday morning following an altercation with police.

According to New Castle officials, a male allegedly broke into a home on East Washington Street in New Castle. A short time later, officers found the man, and claim he was slurring his words and acting erratically.

The man kept telling police his girlfriend drugged him and accused the officers that they were not real cops.

Officers noticed the man was having health-related issues, as they attempted to put him into custody so they could transport the man to the hospital. To no avail, the man fled the police and a short foot pursuit ensued.

As police struggled to place 34-year-old Albert Beckworth-Thompson, he was tasered.

After Beckworth-Thompson was handcuffed, officers noticed he was going in-and-out of consciousness. An ambulance was called and his breathing, as well as his pulse, began to get weaker.

Police began to perform CPR as they waited for an ambulance to arrive. Beckworth-Thompson was transported to UPMC Jameson where they pronounced him deceased.

New Castle Police contacted Pennsylvania State Police to investigate into the circumstances of Beckworth-Thompson's death.
