There was an orange glow Monday in the skies above Shell's cracker plant in Beaver County. The plant went operational two weeks ago.
In a statement, the company says there was an issue with a steam generator that set off the ground flare system. Some residents dealing with noise issues and have concerns about the air and water.
"As we get up to full speed, we may occasionally have instances where we need to flare the hydrocarbons so that they don't have a negative impact on the system, our workers or the community. The goal is to have a smooth-running operation that doesn't disrupt the community in any way."
Shell posted a statement on social media saying there was an issue with a steam generator that set off the site's ground flare system. The company says it was working as designed.
The plant produces small plastic pellets manufacturers use to make a wide variety of plastic products.
"The health and safety of our workers and the community are our top priorities," Said a Shell Polymers representative.
Out of an abundance of caution, the plant notified the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
