A Private investigator is sharing new information about a 40-year-old Butler County cold case.

8-year-old Cherrie Mahan disappeared on February 22, 1985 only 50 feet from her driveway near Cabot after getting off a school bus.

Private investigator Steve Ridge says a $100,000 reward offer generated a vast number of tips: One which came from a man who claims he knows what happened to the 8-year-old girl.

“He was with an individual who knew Cherrie very well, who was on a phone call, that he overheard and then after that individual got off the phone call, they said to him, ‘well, I guess now you know that I was responsible or Cherrie’s abduction, so I’ll just tell you the whole story’,” said Ridge.

Ridge says he's confident that these two elements make this a very likely path forward to resolution.

The private investigator is hopeful that Cherrie’s mother might finally get some answers.

Cherrie was declared legally dead in 1998.
