If you have an older cell phone, or know someone who does, state agencies are getting the word out. A transition to 5G cellular service will cause 3G phones to stop operating in 2022.
Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and State Police are urging residents to contact their service provider to find out if their phone is functional, or needs replaced.
PEMA's Jeff Boyle says 2022's changes will render some 3G cell phones useless for making calls and text messages.
"These upgrades may also impact other devices that rely on 3G connectivity, such as medical alert devices, tablets and home security systems."
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have announced plans to shut down their 3G networks as early as February.
