On Tuesday, during the “Giant Eagle Feed the Need Radiothon”, Entercom Pittsburgh raised enough funds to provide over 650,000 meals for people struggling with food insecurity.

Just before the event wrapped up, Mayor Bill Peduto called in to chat with Rick Dayton.

“Having gone through what we had to go through in the 80’s and the 90’s, and continuing to believe that this city is worth fighting for, but when the chips are down, Pittsburghers are always there for one another. And I don’t know if other places are like that, but I know that’s part of our DNA.”

Mayor Peduto went on to put the accomplishments of the day in perspective.

"But just in comparison, over the entire year, we delivered 500,000 meals. In 12 hours, you’ve already exceeded 600,000. So, what is being done today, and I hope that’s not lost on Pittsburghers, it is not only compassion, but it is essential. Right now, in our region, 1 out of 5 children are hungry.”

He concluded the interview by complimenting all parties involved. After calling Lisa Scales, the President and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the “Pittsburgher of the year”, he went on to praise the volunteers.

“Everybody who I have had the opportunity to work with at the food bank are not only great people, they’re very compassionate and nice people, and you like to work with them."
