University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Patrick Gallagher is stepping down.
The university made the announcement Thursday morning saying Patrick Gallagher will step down in the Summer 2023, marking nine years in the office.
"Serving as Chancellor at one of the greatest public research universities in the nation is deeply fulfilling and rewarding," Gallagher wrote in a message to the University community. "I am very proud of where Pitt is today, and I think the University is well positioned for a new leader to take the helm and thrive."
He will return to teaching, becoming a full-time faculty member in the department of physics and astronomy.
The university's board of trustees is expected to begin a national search process, and intends to name a replacement before Gallagher steps down next summer.
Prior to joining the university, Chancellor Gallagher spent more than 20 years in public service for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Gallagher described his next chapter at Pitt as a "dream come true."
