Pittsburgh International Airport historical figures getting a new home

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sport

The likes of famous names such as Nellie Bly, George Washington, and Steelers legend Franco Harris are departing their longtime Airside Terminal home to a much more accessible Landside Terminal.

The passing of Harris in late December, had Steeler fans finding themselves flocking to Franco's statue.

They were overcome by a roadblock in doing so though, they were unable to reach the statue due to airport security and not having a ticket.

This prompted the airport staff to think of a solution so visitors could see Harris along with the other statues any day, even without a ticket.

The staff built out a place for the figures behind the Information Desk near the primary TSA checkpoint.

Now all visitors will be greeted home after they get off the trains to the Landside terminal.

Hall of Famer Franco Harris is one of the most important Pittsburgh icons, from his "Immaculate Reception" to the leadership and generosity to the community even after his retirement.

"We appreciate how important he's become to so many of our passengers, and we really feel this is the best way to share him with the region," Keny Marshall, the airport Arts & Culture Manager said.

The figure depicting the famed running backs reception was implemented in the airport 20 years ago and refurbished fully in 2019. Harris' figure and the others are loaned from the Heinz History Center.
