Port Authority's Smithfield-Sixth stop to close down temporarily

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio KDKA) — Port Authority announced Friday that one of its busiest stops will be shutting down temporarily for five days at the end of June.

Port Authority's Smithfield Street and Sixth Avenue stop will be closed starting Sunday, June 20 and will run through Thursday, June 24.

The bus stop will be inaccessible because it will become an art exhibit for those five days.

According to Port Authority, detours will be available while the Smithfield-Sixth stop is down: "Bus routes 39-Brookline, 40-Mount Washington, 44-Knoxville, P1-East Busway, P68-Braddock Hills Flyer, and P71-Swissvale Flyer will pick up and drop off at the nearby bus stop on Sixth Avenue next to the Henry W. Oliver Building and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral."

The art exhibit was funded by Smart Growth America and envisioned by local artist Janel Young.

This particular piece, titled "RESPECT," will "encourage riders to be mindful of their neighbors."

Young's RESPECT is one of three art projects unveiled in the second wave of the Smart Growth America's Arts & Transportation Response Initiative.
