May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and to raise awareness, local officials are asking for those on the roads to stay vigilant.

From 2016-2020, PennDOT reports that there were over 5,000 bicycle-related accidents on roadways in Pennsylvania.
PennDOT spokesperson Yasmeen Manyisha says that respect is needed between drivers and bicyclists.
“Bicycles are considered vehicles on the road and must obey all traffic laws, including riding on the right-hand side of the road, abiding traffic signs and signals, and signaling when they want to turn.”
PennDOT and Allegheny County police also recommend that all bicyclists wear a helmet. Currently, Pennsylvania only requires children under 12 to wear them.
