The newest COVID-19 vaccine site in Allegheny County could be coming to Ross Township.
Board of Commissioners say it was a unanimous vote to authorize their community center gym for use as an Allegheny County Covid-19 vaccination site.
Commissioner Joe Laslavic says if supply allows, they plan to vaccinate 1000 people a day, 6 days a week for nine months.
He says they saw the opportunity to fill a need in the region. "We felt with the location, with the proximity to the people in the north, we felt this is our way of doing something to help out."
"It's something we want to get done as quick as possible, so we can get this moving toward March 1. I guess that's our date we're currently shooting for," he said.
Ross Township's Facebook page posted that date as the goal is to begin vaccinations at the location, but the beginning date depends on the vaccine supply.
There's been no official announcement from the county yet. County spokesperson Amie Downs said there's no start date and Ross Township is only one of the sites they're exploring. "The Ross location is just one of the various sites we are exploring to secure for vaccine distribution.
"We want to be ready when supplies increase and will make those announcements as appropriate," said Downs.
Laslavic says they need volunteers. "It's not only just for Ross, but other sites too that are in need of volunteers. People to administer the vaccines, but also to do something as working with paperwork."
All appointments can only be booked through Allegheny County, people shouldn't be calling Ross Township.
The County Health Department says volunteers can sign up here: mrc.hhs.gov.
