Search continues for National Aviary's escaped eagle, Kodiak

Stellar's Sea Eagle

PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) The search for Kodiak, the Steller's Sea Eagle that escaped from its enclosure in the National Aviary, is still on nearly a week later.

The story and search for Kodiak has been the talk of the Pittsburgh area since it broke free almost a week ago.

On Saturday Kodiak, or Kody, escaped from the National Aviary on the North Side and has been seen in spots around the city since.

The sightings have occurred in the North Side and Riverview Park but no capture has been made yet.

Kody has been a member of the Aviary for 15 years and may be easily frightened if approached.

Aviary officials are still not sure how Kody escaped, but noted there is a gap in the habitats caging.

If Kody is spotted in public, the Aviary is urging that you don't approach the bird, but call them immediately at 412-323-7235.

Strategic efforts to find the bird have been underway by the Aviary and its officials since the escape.

Steller's Sea Eagles are twice the size of bald eagles and aren't usually seen flying a huge heights or for extended periods of times.

Officials say Kody is likely to be found taking short flights from tree to tree.
