Allegheny County continues to consider options for juvenile detention facilities. Council members just got a look at the former Shuman Center Tuesday.

County leaders last told us they planned to renovate the old Shuman Center with hopes of opening in some capacity by the end of the year.

They're looking for options because there's no facility to hold violent teens. Council President Pat Catena was a guest on the Big K Morning Show.

“The tour came about because a few week ago, I introduced a resolution at the County Council, to basically look, to gather a group together to see what it would take to reopen Shuman Center and basically try to reimagine it to deal with the current problems that we’re having,” said Catena.

With the amount of work to do in reopening the facility, Catena is not sure it can be done before the end of the year, with so much work still needed to be done.

Local law enforcement and community members have begged for a stronger effort on juvenile crime. Many young offenders in Allegheny County are released with nowhere to put them.
