The Pennsylvania Innocence Project says thousands of people will be affected by a state Supreme Court ruling this week.
The court has struck down mandatory life sentences for felony murder and Nilam Sanghvi the legal director of the Pa Innocence Project says people that didn't commit the violent act or didn't have the intent to kill will no longer be given a mandatory life sentence.
She says the legislature must now create a process to handle re-sentencing:
"We're very hopeful that this will eventually be held to apply to everyone in this situation so that anyone convicted of felony murder in Pennsylvania can have the individualized sentencing that the court has said is reported," she said.
Sanghvi says this ruling had the support of the governor, former prosecutors and even victims families.
