A Pine-Richland High School student is pushing back against a possible book ban.
High school junior Elise Duckworth will be at Monday's school board meeting with a message for members considering banning books she says have educational value.
“I grew up on a lot of these books that they’re trying to remove and I think they have a lot of significance to the young mind and growing a student’s empathy and understand of things that happened in history and I think it’s really important to read these things and grow on them,” Duckworth told The Big K Morning show.
Elise says some of the books under review are classics like "The Color Purple" and "To Kill a Mockingbird."
“These books have educational value and the little clips of them, that [critics] see as sexually inappropriate have a lot of importance in the context of the book,” said Duckworth.
Duckworth will present the board with a petition signed by 2,000 Pine Richland students opposed to a book ban.
