If you haven't visited any of Pittsburgh's museums lately, August is the month to do it.

An unprecedented announcement Tuesday from the Allegheny Regional Asset District board: The Andy Warhol Museum, Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and the Heinz History Center will be open to visitors free of charge every operating day throughout the month of August.

RAD Board Chair Dan Griffin explains it's to celebrate those museums being recognized among the nation's best in USA Today.

“Well, the staff came up with the idea and they wanted to make it so more kids could go, obviously they’re off of school during the summer, makes it more available, easier to schedule,” said Griffin.

He says RAD is underwriting whatever loss of ticket revenue that would occur because of the visits.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such great cultural institutions in this city, county and region, and thanks to the USA TODAY Readers’ Choice Awards, we know that many outside of this area agree,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “Just as important as the national honors, are the support that we receive from those who call this community home. Kudos to RAD as well as The Andy Warhol Museum, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, and the Heinz History Center for providing this opportunity for our residents to enjoy each of these world-class institutions for free during August.”

The Warhol finished 4th for best Art Museum, History Center was 2nd for best History Museum and the Children’s Museum came in 2nd in its category.

Pittsburgh is the only city to have three museums recognized.

Those who want to visit are encouraged to go to the website of the museum you’d like to attend to book a visit.
