The University of Pittsburgh has received city planning commission approval to build a nine-story student recreation center in North Oakland.
The 400,000-square-foot recreation and wellness center, to be built on O'Hara Street, will house gyms, fitness centers, pool, a spa, and locker rooms.
The recreation center is said to cost around $255 million and also include parking for 64 bikes and 450 cars.
Trees and possibly art instillations are planning on being put up around the recreation center.
Commissioner Holly Dick wants the University to have the facility to be open to all residents in the Oakland area, student or not.
A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in September. Completion is expected in fall 2024. The center will be the first major building in Pitt's 30-year master plan.
