Researchers at UPMC say it's time to open nursing homes and other long-term care facilities - with precautions.
About 1% of the American population lives in nursing homes, but these residents account for a third of all coronavirus deaths in the U-S.
A new study from UPMC examined 70 residents of long-term care facilities a couple weeks after being fully vaccinated and found that all of them had developed at least some antibodies.
Dr. David Nace says more research is needed. "While there is an antibody response to the vaccine, we don't know how good of an antibody response it is, how ell does it protect vulnerable adults or exactly how long does this antibody response last."
But the presence of antibodies is enough to support reopening with continued mask wearing and social distancing.
