Will 2023 bring the Steel City a white Christmas?
According to a new survey from PennStakes.com, 59 percent of American's are hoping for a white Christmas, but only 50 percent of Pennsylvanians want to see snow.
So, how likely will it be for Pittsburgh to have snow on the ground come December 25th?
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok says “We know that probabilities of a White Christmas in the Pittsburgh area is about anywhere from 55 to 65 percent, so you can get white Christmas’ quite often that time of the year, it is cold enough usually but, here’s the thing there’s not going to be a lot of snow on the ground.”
Pastelok mentioned how it was pretty far out to pinpoint individual systems right now, however, an official Christmas forecast from AccuWeather will be provided some time the week prior.
The first half of winter is predicted to be on the drier side.
Meteorologist Matt Benz says it's thanks to an el Niño cycle.
“It looks like the first half of the winter, we’re talking December, January maybe into the first part of February, it may be kind of limited for snow just because we won’t have much in the way of storms moving through the region and it could be on the warm side,” said Benz.
Benz says the tail end of winter could be a different story, where the bulk of the snow could come around March.
