While 2019 may have been the height of the chicken sandwich wars between fast food chains in the United States, McDonald's is roaring back into battle with a vengeance just in time for 2021.
The fast food giant announced on Monday that it plans to release a new crispy chicken sandwich across the country early next year, reports CNN.
Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's USA, said that the chain wants "customers to choose McDonald's for chicken." In a press release, the company said that chicken is "a category that is growing faster than beef."
The crispy chicken will be served on a potato roll with crinkle-cut pickles and butter.
Spicy Chicken McNuggets, which were added to the McDonald's menu in mid-September, quickly became so popular across the country that there were reports of restaurants selling out of them. The spicy variety of the McDonald's fan-favorite menu item is the first new rendition of the McNugget since its conception in 1983.
Late last year, McDonald's tested two new chicken sandwiches and introduced two new chicken sandwiches to its all-day breakfast menu, the McChicken Biscuit and the Chicken McGriddle, reports Delish.
This week, the chain also announced that it plans to roll out a plant-based burger next year. The "McPlant" will be "made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."
The plant-based meat will also be available for other sandwiches and breakfast items. CEO Chris Kempczinski said that availability of the plant-based option will be based on customer demand.
