(WWJ) An investigation is underway in Northern Michigan after two unidentified people were found dead on Isle Royale.
At around 4 p.m. on Sunday, the National Park Service says park rangers at Isle Royale National Park received two separate reports about two people who were found dead at a remote backcountry campground within the park.
Two rangers hiked overnight 11 miles to the campground to assess the situation, arriving early Monday morning, and confirmed the discovery.
The NPS said the two people found dead have yet to be identified, and it's not yet known how they died.
On Monday, additional ground and aviation resources were deployed to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.
NPS said more information will be released once it's made available.
Isle Royale, located in northwest Lake Superior, is famous for being Michigan's largest island, covering more than 206 square miles, and home to a relatively stable gray wolf population. The island and the numerous surrounding smaller islands make up Isle Royale National Park, known for its extensive hiking trails, shipwrecks, historic lighthouses, ancient copper mines, and variety of wildlife.
