If you were given a map of the world, would you be able to pick out where Ukraine is located?
Ex-president Donald Trump apparently couldn't. That's according to his former National Security Adviser, John Bolton.
Bolton recently appeared on the right-wing cable news channel Newsmax, where he pushed back against host Rob Schmitt's assertion that the Russian invasion of Ukraine wouldn't have happened under Trump's watch.
"The fact is, he barely knew where Ukraine was," Bolton said. "He once asked John Kelly, his second chief of staff, if Finland were apart of Russia.
"It's just not accurate to say that Trump's behavior somehow deterred the Russians," Bolton continued.
Schmitt rattled off a list of actions taken by the former administration, saying Trump was "pretty tough on Russia" and implemented 52 policy actions against the country, but Bolton vehemently disagreed.
While the White House did sanction Russia, "in almost every case, the sanctions were imposed with Trump complaining about it, saying we were being too hard," Bolton said.
Schmitt said he was "surprised" that Bolton didn't think Trump would be handling the situation better than Biden.
"I don't think he understood what he was doing, that's my fundamental point," Bolton said. "This is not really a policy argument, this is about Trump's lack of any significant historical knowledge, his lack of strategic thinking and, frankly, his lack of thinking about pretty much anything other than what benefited Donald Trump.
"Trump was not fit to be president," Bolton added bluntly. "He was not competent to be president."
At that point, Schmitt called out Bolton saying, "You worked for him, though." The former security advisory responded by saying he "jumped at the chance" because he wanted to "protect American national security."
Trump and Bolton had a spectacular falling out that led to the president calling Bolton "incompetent," a "wacko," "disaster," and a "disgruntled, boring fool."
Trump has not commented on Bolton's remarks.
