Because of smoke from wildfires in Canada, Tuesday is a Code Orange air quality action day in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

The Department of Environmental Protection says air quality could be unhealthy for sensitive groups including children, the elderly and people with respiratory issues.

Highs are expected to be close to 90 degrees on Tuesday with hazy sunshine throughout the day.

In a statement, the DEP says, “Smoke from wildfires in northern and western Canada, along with light winds, will likely contribute to daily average concentrations of fine particulate matter in the Code Orange range on Tuesday.”

That smoke caused a light haze around the area on Monday and made the sun appear bright orange, especially around sunset.

The DEP encourages those in the affected area to:

Reduce or eliminate fireplace and wood stove use
Avoid the open burning of leaves, trash and other material
Do not use your gas-powered lawnmower.
