After only a few days as a free agent, Todd Frazier is coming back to Pittsburgh, just not on the Major League roster.
Fan Pirates insider Jason Mackey of the Post-Gazette says that “Frazier will remain with the Pirates, source confirms. Will be one of the players starting at the alternate training site in Pittsburgh.”
It is reportedly a Minor League deal. A number of players will train in Pittsburgh at PNC Park and the University of Pittsburgh’s facilities when the Pirates are playing at PNC. Heinz Field will be the player’s locker room area.
Kevin Newman says he’s glad to have Frazier back with the club.
"He was a fun guy to have around. Light-hearted guy, brings a lot of energy and a lot of experience. It was cool playing with him and picking his brain. Excited for him to be around and continue to learn from a guy like that."
Frazier was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training but showed he still has what it takes to play in The Show, but apparently couldn’t find a team that would have them on their MLB roster.
In 33 plate appearances, Frazier went 7 for 27 for a .259 batting average and four walks.
Frazier led the Pirates in home runs with three and had a .996 on base percentage. He split his time between first and third base.
The 35-year-old infielder endeared himself to fans throughout Spring Training while mic’ed up a few times during broadcasts.
