Any remaining hope that some fans would be able to attend a Penguins game at PPG Paints Arena in the near future have been dashed.

The Penguins confirmed on Monday morning that they will not be allowed to host any fans for their four January home games due to local and state COVID-19 protocols.

Pennsylvania's limits on indoor gatherings would include all players, team personnel, arena staff and other essential to game activities.

Any remaining capacity would be reserved for family and friends of the players and team.

“We look forward to welcoming fans back to PPG Paints Arena as soon as state safety protocols and capacity-limits allow for it,” said Kevin Acklin, chief operating officer of the Penguins.

“We will remain in regular contact with state and local authorities, as well as the NHL, and will make an announcement when fans are permitted to attend. The health and safety of our fans and players will always be our top priority.”

The puck drops on the Pens' 2020-21 season home opener against rivals the Washington Capitals on January 17. There are three other home games in January for the Penguins.
