The Auto Club of Southern California expects more than 2.7 million Southern Californians to be traveling on the roads over the July 4 holiday weekend. The California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement will be out in force as well.

Because the Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday, the Maximum Enforcement Period will last for a full five days, beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. and stretching until midnight on Tuesday.

CHP Officer April Elliot says the primary violation officers will be looking for is speeding. Drivers in a rush are more likely to engage in aggressive driving, which leads to accidents.

“If people are going in and out of lanes, aversive turning movements, fast lane changes, and tailgating, following too closely, maybe possibly brake checking. We look for all those type of behavior,” she told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.

Last year on the Fourth of July weekend, the CHP arrested 1000 drivers statewide for being impaired behind the wheel, and 44 people were killed in crashes on that same weekend. To avoid a repeat of those figures, the patrol is urging drivers to leave for your destination early – and arrive relaxed and alive.
