LOS ANGELES (KNX) – On the heels of the release of the video showing the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis, Tennessee officers, one councilmember said he’s already seen the video.
Martavius Jones, chair of the Memphis City Council, told KNX In Depth he saw four different clips during an "attorney-client privilege meeting."
“The first footage that we saw- I think it lasted about 10 to 11 minutes - and this was body cam footage of an officer arriving at the scene of a traffic stop,” he explained.
“There were already one, maybe two other cars that were already there on the scene. These were unmarked police cars…one of them I recall had their lights flashing, so you know it was law enforcement involved. So, you have an officer arrive in his vehicle and Mr.
Nichols’ car is already stopped. So that video takes place at an intersection, at a red light.”
Jones said the second clip, which he said was taken by what it referred to as a “sky cop camera”, was 30 minutes and showed what he described as a “bird’s eye view” of the second interaction between Nichols and police in a neighborhood.
“One of the characterizations that I heard about the footage beforehand is that was it just as bad or worse than the Rodney King beating and I do not think that that was the case,” Jones said, adding that it’s an “apples to orange comparison.”
“Although it was a beating at the hands of police, to think that this was just a traffic stop that resulted in this, it’s horrific when you put it into that perspective,” he continued.
The video will be released to the public at 4 p.m. PST.
