Many residents living near Whiteman Airport in Pacoima say they want it closed after four planes have crashed in the last five years.

The latest crash occurred Monday morning when a small plane hit a power pole as it was coming in for a landing, flipped over, and landed upside down in an O'Reilly's parking lot. The lone pilot was listed in critical condition.

Armando, a resident, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez he’s very concerned.

“I think the airport should be moved out,” he said. “It's not a good place anymore now that there's more residents coming in.”

Officials with Whiteman Airport sent out a statement after the crash saying it is owned and operated by L.A. County and that the county has not used federal aviation administration money to make significant improvements to the airport. They also said the airport cannot be closed without FAA approval.
