In the midst of Israel's ongoing war with Hamas, concerns are growing over protests in the United States growing violent.

According to NBC News, officers in cities across the U.S. are increasing police presence at protests, as well as adding extra security to mosques and synagogues.

Law enforcement in Los Angeles announced it is stepping up patrols in both Jewish and Muslim communities.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department shared a statement from Chief Michel Moore on X that read, “The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the turmoil in the Middle East and lives lost. In those areas where we serve both our Jewish and Muslim communities, we will be conducting extra patrol to ensure the safety of all."

Former Los Angeles City Councilmember and reserve officer Joe Buscaino told KNX News’ Jon Baird, “There are a lot of emotions that are flaring at this moment in our city. So, the LAPD has to gather their intelligence to monitor social media posts. Really up the patrol of sensitive sites such as mosques and synagogues.”

He added that the community also needs to step up and help.

"The police officers cannot be in every street corner 24/7," he said. "This is why we need to have the community come up to the police department when they see something. They have to say something. We are gonna see increased calls for service, I'm assuming centered around hate crimes and suspicious packages."

In a repost of the statement, Moore added, “As Los Angeles has one of the largest Jewish communities in the Nation, we are closely monitoring the tragic attacks in Israel and have stepped up patrols around synagogues and surrounding neighborhoods.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department announced it was stepping up patrols as well.

“We would like to ensure all residents, we are monitoring, remaining vigilant, and conducting extra patrol checks in our areas,” they said. “We are working closely with our federal and local law enforcement partners to monitor the situation.”

A Stand with Israel rally will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. outside the West Los Angeles federal building.
