Santa Monica Police increase patrols following Rittenhouse verdict

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KNX) — Santa Monica Police are on high alert Friday, following a jury's not guilty decision in the Wisconsin case of Kyle Rittenhouse.

In a tweet, Police Chief Ramon Batista explained that his team is aware of the concern surrounding the case and the potential for local protests in response to the decision. However, Batista said, there has been no indication that any protests are planned.

"Even though there is no indication at this time that any type of activities specifically affecting our community, I want everyone to know that we are steadfastly committed to safeguarding our city," Batista said in a statement.

Batista said the department is working with the City's Emergency Operations Center and the agencies have taken steps to prepare to protect the community if any protests occur.

SMPD has implemented a response plan that includes an increased number of police officers across the city through the weekend.

"I would like to remind all our community members and visitors that we count on you to be our eyes and ears when we are not around," Batista said. "If your see something, say something by calling 310-458-8491 or 911 during a life-threatening emergency."
