A man living in the St. Louis area is believed to be among oldest people in the world to survive coronavirus – and he celebrated the victory on his 107th birthday.
Rudi Heider is a resident at Friendship Village in Chesterfield and on April 29 was able to return to his room and be back in his own bed after being treated for COVID-19 by the staff at the skilled nursing and rehabilitation center.
His family was there and allowed to gather outside of his window. And he was even able to enjoy of slice of his favorite dessert – lemon meringue pie.
Heiber says he's also happy to be surrounded by sweaters that his late wife of 61 years, Lorraine, knitted for him and looks forward to getting back to reading about politics and financial journals.
“I’m really missing all of the nice things from people because of this disease. Each person is so different. I like people and all their different talents,” says Heider as he looks forward to the day he is able to be with family and others again.
There have been many stories published in the last month about a possible "oldest survivor" of COVID-19, including a 106-year-old Connie Titchen of Great Britain, 104-year-old Bill Lapschies of Oregon is among the oldest American's with Heider. But there are also reports of another 107-year-old who lives in the Netherlands. Cornelia Ras reportedly started to feel sick on March 18, a day after her 107th birthday, but two-and-a-half weeks later doctors told Ras she was virus-free.
