EAGLE, Mich. (WWJ) -- While some Michiganders were heading out for football games at the Big House and Spartan Stadium on Saturday, others were fired up for a different kind of contest.
The Mullet Superbowl.
Al Durham of Guy With A Mullet Landscaping hosted the first ever Mullet Superbowl on Saturday at the Eagle Park Fairgrounds, just west of Lansing.
The contest was part of the Eagle Days celebration, held annually the weekend after Labor Day. Durham says the event will become an annual celebration of mullets during Eagle Days.
The winner, Garrison Rogers, walked away with the grand prize of a Yeti Cooler and a case of Busch Light, while the participants in the kids’ age group got bluetooth speakers and cookies.
“I think everybody should try a mullet at least once in their life,” Durham told WILX in Lansing. “It’s a door-opening experience.”
Durham tells WWJ the Mullet Superbowl brought more people to the Eagle Days beer tent than he’s seen in 20 years -- they ran out of beer and had to go get more.
Durham started Guy With A Mullet Landscaping as a side project to save enough money to buy a Harley Davidson motorcycle, but business skyrocketed after his mullet photoshoot went viral online --even leading to a calendar fans could purchase -- and he made it his full-time job.
He says he got the idea to bring the mullet contest to Eagle Days after he was asked to judge the Eaton County Mullet Contest.
“I had a blast and I wanted to have my own at Eagle Days because I grew up coming to Eagle Days. So it was great to bring it back home,” Durham said.
