St. Louis City SC Head Coach Bradley Carnell on team's loss to Sporting KC: 'We have to work harder than our opponent'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis City SC's first game in the MLS Playoffs did not go as planned.

Despite frigid temperatures, feelings of excitement was high Sunday night as the team played their first MLS playoff game ever against rival Sporting Kansas City. But sadly, the team that won wasn't St. Louis City SC, as the team lost 4-1 to their rivals in the first game of a best-of-three series.

City SC Head Coach Bradley Carnell joined Total Information A.M. for his weekly interview and while he was disappointed with the result, the result showed how tough the MLS playoffs are.

"(This loss) just shows how tight this league is," said Carnell. "When there is one or two off days, the ability to really bounce back and get on the ascendency again, this league, with all the parity that it has, we have to be at our best to perform."

Carnell did say that he did get a sense of feeling that the performance by St. Louis was going to be a grind and ultimately, it led to Sporting KC getting a blowout victory.

"We have to work ourselves to the success, we have to work harder than the opponent then we will get successful," said Carnell. "I thought last night (Sporting KC) had worked us a bit."

Luckily for St. Louis City SC, it is a best-of-three series, so the team will be able to clear the thoughts out of Sunday's loss quickly and move on to the second game at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas Sunday.

"We're going to have our hands full, but we dished out before, we're getting dished out now. We know it doesn't taste very nice, but we're expecting a bounce back ability," said Carnell. "We're expecting another edge, another performance. It's not an aggregate score line where it can hurt you. It's a drubbing, but we move on. We've beaten this team twice this year. Not all is doom or gloom."
