It will cost Wichita more to complete Phase 1A of the city's aquatics master plan.

The Wichita City Council approved the project, which will renovate pools at Aley, McAdams, and Orchard Parks. Gary Janzen with the city explained why it will cost more to finish.

"During project development/design we try to mitigate the risk that the contractors see with this type of work, and there's not a lot of contractors that do the work," Mr. Janzen said.

The lowest bid exceeded the engineer's estimate by $983 thousand. The aquatics plan will provide $22 million in pool and water playground improvements and will be completed over the next two years.

Look for renovation and upgrades at several Wichita park and recreational facilities too, including a shelter replacement at North Linwood Park on east Harry. That structure was destroyed in a fire back in February. The city plans other work at Swanson Park, Edgemoor Rec Center, the West Side Athletic Field Stadium, Pawnee Prairie Park Nature Center and Chisholm Creek Park.
