Sedgwick County Commissioners got an update on property tax values prior to next month's mailing of valuation notices.

Deanna Aspedon, the county's new appraiser, said that 88 percent of residential parcels will see an increase in property value this year, with a median net rise of 9.3 percent.

Commissioner Ryan Baty said valuations should have nothing to do with property tax increases. He encouraged the 100-plus taxing jurisdictions in the county to build their budgets on what they need, and not the full 9.3 percent net increase in valuation.

Property valuation notices will be mailed out on March 1 and property owners will have 30 days to appeal. Complete the back page of the notice and return it to the appraiser's office or go online to the county's website.

Appeals will be heard from March through May.
